Why did Tulsidas compose Shri Hanuman Chalisa?
During the era of Tulsidas, India & entire Indian subcontinent was under perpetual attacks & invasions by Arabic invaders. Akbar was the Mughal emperor at that time & the indigenous residents of India, i.e the Hindus, were subjected to a lot of torture & were made to bear un-explicable atrocities by these foreign invaders & their armies.
Saint Tulsidas’s fame, of being a siddha yogi & a saint, who can perform miracles, reached Akbar’s ears. He ordered his troops to get Tulsidas before him. Tulsidas was forcibly brought to Akbar’s court near Fatehpur Sikri. Akbar asked the saint to perform miracles to please him. The humble saint Tulsidas politely refused saying, I do not perform miracles, it is Lord Ram & Lord Hanuman, who are responsible for such extra-ordinarily unbelievable incidents which keep happening around him, when he prays to them.
The emperor ordered Tulsidas to pray & make the Hindu gods, Lord Ram & Lord Hanuman, perform some magic to please him or else get ready to be thrown into the prison. The great saint Tulsidas refused to perform miracles saying, “my god & his blissful lila which you are referring to as miracles are not meant for entertainment.”
Thus Tulsidas was imprisoned. He had to spend a lot of days in Emperor Akbar’s prison at Fatehpur Sikri. That was the time when Tulsidas, the great saint, had composed Shri Hanuman Chalisa. The day he had finished composing Hanuman Chalisa, there were a lot of monkeys that had swarmed the entire area in which Tulsidas was being held as a prisoner.
The fort area of Fatehpur Sikri, the court, the palace, the prison, roads, houses of soldiers were all heavily infested with monkeys. These monkeys created a total mess & a hell of a chaotic situation. They were attacking soldiers & people with their fangs & claws, eating & destroying fruits & foodstuff. No one was able to understand from where did so many monkeys appear all of a sudden.
Some men went to emperor Akbar & told him that this could be the wrath of the Hindu Gods – Lord Ram & Lord Hanuman as they had wrongly & forcefully detained the great Saint & poet Tulsidas. Akbar ordered his soldiers to immediately release Tulsidas. Akbar fell at the feet of Tulsidas & sought his forgiveness. Tulsidas, being a humble saint, forgave him immediately. This is the factual tale behind the creation & composition of Shri Hanuman Chalisa.

Procedure to chant Sri Hanuman Chalisa dohas in English.
The process of chanting & recitations of specific Sri Hanuman Chalisa dohas are very easy & deprived of any kinds of complications. To begin with, one must apply tilak on forehead using chandan paste(chandan powder mixed with water) or kesar or even vermillion. If none of these is available, then one can apply tilak using turmeric paste(turmeric mixed with water).
After applying tilak, one needs to sit on an aasan which is made up of a non conducting element & start chanting the doha[or shlok or mantra] by focusing our entire concentration on the point between both our eyebrows(known as aagya chakra). Try to mentally imagine the image of Lord Hanuman at that point & continue chanting. The aasan needs to be made of wool or the material from which blankets are made.
Why should you sit on aasan or asan for chanting and puja?
The idea behind sitting on an aasan for any kind of chanting, recitation, puja or spiritual rituals is to stop the flow of spiritual energy(earthing) being generated during that process, from the body to the earth.
Whenever we chant a mantra, spiritual energy is generated within our body as a result of continuous chanting of special words embedded in the mantras. This spiritual energy flows & starts circulating in the entire body covering every nerve vessel, flesh, bones & reaching every part of our body. When the chanting is done continuously for some time, problems & ailments that have been plaguing the entire system within the human body get rectified as a result of the current of the spiritual energy.
Hence, in Hinduism ie Sanatan Dharm, it is always advised to do any kind of chanting(mantra jap), recitations(path), any kind of rituals and/or prayers while being seated on an aasan.
How many times chanting of Sri Hanuman Chalisa doha is needed?
If you have time you can chant as many times as possible. At least chant it for a 100 times daily. It is advisable to chant using a mala(chain made up of 108 beads). Thus if you chant one mala, it would mean you have chanted the doha 108 times. 3 malas chanting implies a chanting of 324 times etc…
The higher is the number of chants, more quickly will you see the positive results. There are people who chant ritualistically by sitting on an aasan during mornings & in the evenings. They chant a fixed number of malas, say 3 malas in the morning & 3 malas in the evening. Apart from this ritualistic chanting, they continue chanting it(mentally within) throughout the day while continuing with their routine.
Mantra Chanting Principle
The principle or rule of chanting is simple. More is the chanting done, more quickly will you get the results. In Sanskrit – “अधिकस्य जपम अधिकस्य फलम” which means the more you chant the more fruits you get or rewards you reap. So those who wish to get quick results should continue chanting & take care that the spiritual energy generated as a result of the chanting which flows in the body in the form of spiritual current, should ‘not get earthing’
Requirements of aasan or asan for the chanting
From a spiritual perspective, aasans made up of wool or the material which makes up a blanket alone are ideal. One can sit & start chanting & nothing else is needed. Those who do chanting should have their own personal aasan. One individual’s aasan should not be shared/used by another person.
However, if someone wants to do the chanting in a very disciplined & ritualistic way then he can place an aasan made of kush(a form of dry grass) on the ground & above it place the woolen asan or the ‘blanket asan’.
But as the aasan made of kush is difficult to get, hence the woolen aasan is enough. Now that you are seated on your aasan chant the Sri Hanuman chalisa doha as much as you can.
Benefits of chanting Sri Hanuman Chalisa Doha
Apart from the doha mentioned above for curing diseases there are other dohas which are very famous & chanted by Hanuman devotees.
