How were Shakti Peeths in Prayagraj formed?
It is known that Goddess Sati, who was Lord Shiva’s consort, had self immolated herself in the fire of yagya being performed by Daksh. Enraged & being in a state of inconsolable, deep grief; Lord Shiva was held Goddess Sati’s body in his arms. With Sati in his arms, Lord Shiva started performing the Shiva-Tandav(dance of destruction).
This was causing acute imbalance in the universe & all the life energies of the cosmos were being driven & sucked in towards Lord Shiva. If the world would have been completely deprived of all the cosmic energies it would have meant a complete catastrophic & apocalyptic annihilation of not only mankind but all living beings.
It was necessary to somehow make Lord Shiva come out from this mental state of intense grief which was leading towards total destruction. For this Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshan Chakra & sent it in the direction of Lord Shiva. The Sudarshan Chakra cut Goddess Sati’s body, which was deprived of any life energy, into 51 parts.
3 out of those 51 parts of Goddess Sati fell in Prayagraj. Thus 3 Shaktipeeths were formed in Prayagraj. Let us find out a bit more about these 3 Shakti Peeths
1) Kalyani Devi Shakti Peeth
The ancient Hindu scriptures mention the temple & the Goddess- Mata Kalyani Devi. In the Prayag Mahatmya of Padma Puran, 17th verse of 76th chapter carries a detailed description eulogizing & glorifying the divinity of Mata Kalyani Devi.
3 fingers of Goddess Sati fell down at this place & as a result this place came to be known as a Shakti Peeth. Intensely positive cosmic energies are experienced by the devotees who visit these 51 shakti peeths.
It is advisable to sit at such holy places quietly for a while and absorb all the positive vibes along with the cosmic energies which encapsulate the entire area. Let the cosmic energies get soaked within & perform some internal cleansing while you meditate, pray or just simply- sit quietly.
There are more temples in the temple complex. The Kalyani Shakti Peeth is at a distance of around 4-5 kms from Prayagraj junction.
2) Lalita Devi Shakti Peeth
Fingers of Goddess Sati had fallen at this place thus this place is also one of the 51 shakti peeths. In this temple the devotees pray to the Goddess who is present in the form of Goddess Kali, Goddess Lakshmi & Goddess Saraswati. Along with Lalita Devi’s temple there is a Sankat mochan Hanuman temple as well within the complex.
It is firmly believed that the rivers Ganga, Jamuna & Saraswati flow through this area by touching the feet of Goddess Lalita Devi. This temple is situated in the area named Mirapur & it takes around 5-7 minutes driving time from Kalyani Devi Shakti Peeth.
It is advisable to always travel during the day time & keep seeking help in getting directions from the locals to reach the temple.
3) The Mysterious Alopi Devi Shakti Peeth
The Alopi Devi Shakti Peeth is mystical because it has a wooden cradle. It has been observed that this cradle mysteriously starts rocking automatically sometimes at night, indicating a divine presence.
At this place a part of Goddess Sati’s hand had fallen down. The moment it fell, it vanished into a pit in the ground. In Hindi, Alop means to disappear. Thus this place came to be known as Alopi Devi Shakti Peeth. This was the place where the last body part of Goddess Shakti was reported to have fallen on the earth. Hence the Alopi Devi Shakti Peeth is also known as the last Shakti Peeth on earth.
Thus this temple does not have any idol. Rather there is a wooden cradle which is covered. People pray in front of this wooden cradle. They bow down, touch the holy wooden cradle with their foreheads. Devotees have experienced intensely positive vibes & describe their visit to this shakti peeth as a truly blissful experience.
